2018 Award
BT TSO See.Sense with Manchester CityVerve Cycling Trial

The judges said
This project demonstrates how you can engage citizens in the collection of useful data to build a smart city that serves everyone.
Entrant's description
Sensor-enabled and connected bike lights (See.Sense ICONs) are used by Manchester cyclists as part of CityVerve project. Anonymised data on the cyclist’s environment (the quality of the road surface, light levels, as well as cycling routes, collisions and near-miss events) is collected and transmitted to BT’s IoT data hub. The lights, designed specifically to be daylight-visible, enhance cyclist safety in all lighting conditions, while flashing brighter and faster in riskier situations. IoT data hub collates data from different sources and exposes insight to multiple consumers, allowing developers to turn innovative ideas into applications in many areas (improving cycling ecosystem).
