Manchester Digital Laboratory - MadLab - is about grassroots innovation, working across science and technology, arts and culture, and so getting involved with the Big Chip Awards was a natural fit for us.

One of the great things about all things digital and creative in the North, particularly in Greater Manchester, is the scale and scope of the sector. There's a real sense of diversity and history where new start-ups work alongside digital businesses who were here at the start in the early 1990s: and businesses, not-for-profit bodies, like MadLab, and public bodies all collaborate and work well together.

Another reason we wanted to get involved with Big Chip was to demonstrate how not-for-profits can play a really important role in developing the sector, providing innovative ways to enable people to gain new skills, exchange knowledge and create new business opportunities.

Winning an award was great for us, not only recognising the work of our team, our volunteers and the communities we support but also enabling us to promote grassroots innovation more widely. As MadLab expands and develops new areas of work, such as through our new MadFabLab makerspace, we are really looking forward to carrying on our collaboration with Manchester Digital, the Big Chip Awards, and others, to help to grow tech and digital across the north.
